The Cry of A Humble Heart

I Kings 3.7-9

“Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give Your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”

We get insight into the heart of Solomon in his early days of becoming king. Taking on leadership of an entity can make the best of men become full of anxiety and fear. The leading of a nation under God was no small thing. It was overwhelming. A nation under God is responsible first of all to please the LORD, to do right, to protect the weakest among us including the unborn.

A nation under God has a Higher calling than the other nations, its leaders, greater responsibility as well as its citizens.

Solomon realized this. He cried out to God for help after the LORD appeared to him.

Up to now he did not have the wisdom necessary to lead the people of God. As we shared last week, David got his training out in the fields, taking care of the sheep. He, like Moses,  learned how to lead Israel from his experience as a shepherd.
Psalm 78.70-72
He chose David His servant and  took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought himto be the shepherd of His people Jacob, of Israel His inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.

Solomon did not have that benefit. The palace has its disadvantages. Moses was in the palace of Pharaoh but he learned more about leading Israel from tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro than he did in the private classes of Egyptians. In fact he had to "unlearn" much of that which he learned in the palace. He was in the wide open spaces now.

There is no substitute for on the job training. God has interesting ways of preparing men to lead. Suffering, difficulty, learning how to stand alone, things we would not sign up for are often the very things God uses to fashion a leader.

So, here was Solomon, king of Israel, with only his own wits and the experience of watching his father, David rule Israel as far back as he could remember and with the final words his father David about being fully committed to following the LORD.

God told Solomon He would give him whatever He asked for.

Solomon realized the great need in his life was help from the LORD to lead Israel. It is fitting when heads of state pray. It is right when they ask sincerely that God would help them.

This is a New Testament principle and promise:
James 1.5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, Who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Solomon understood this and so his heart's cry teaches us several lessons.

1. Acknowledge That Your Success In Your Life Is Due To God. v.7

David did this.
II Samuel 7

“Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

*Solomon followed his example. Solomon realized that it was God Who had placed him as king over Israel. David had simply carried out God's will in appointing him.
It is so wise to realize the Hand of God in our lives. Blessed are the people who have a leader like that!
We ought to follow Solomon's example! Don't just look on the screen, realize there is a whole bunch of stuff going on behind the screen producing what we see. We are not here by chance. We are here by Divine Appointment. God sovereignly works all things together for good for us and others who are the called according to His purposes.  Jesus has all power and authority in heaven and on earth.

It is in both our attitude, our thinking and our actions.
Think of it: To work in the Garden Adam had to bend his knee and kneel, to pick the fruit on the tree God told them not to eat of, he had to stand up and instead of reaching to the LORD His God, He had to reach for that which the LORD had forbidden. In reaching for that fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, Adam attempted to make himself equal with God, the very thing Jesus did not grasp when He humbled Himself and came to earth as a Servant.

*It is always proper to assume the position of a servant. It is right in so many ways. It is appropriate.
Solomon not only realized his royal position was due to the LORD's Hand, he referred to himself as God's servant. Humbling ourselves in the face of promotion is right. Daily humility is the right path to take.

Being a servant puts me at the lowest point. It fulfills this directive in God's Word in Philippians 2.3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

How we struggle with our own self importance! God help us die to it and in so doing peace and joy.

2. Confess Your Inadequacies.

It is not a sign of weakness.
It is facing reality.

I am only a little child.
Solomon was a full grown man but he looked at himself in leading Israel as a child.
A child is
*dependent on his parents
*In need to much care from his elders
*In need of counsel and advice
*unable to take on huge problems
*loving

I do not know how to carry out my duties.
Interesting that in the next chapter he is sets up his administration.
He went to the LORD for direction.
God gave him direction.
As the technology continues to explode all around us we need wisdom from the LORD on how to use it. Doors are open for ministry for little churches like ours in ways we never dreamed of!
Like the Word of God to Habakkuk 1.5 “Look at the nations and watch–and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told."
If God told us  20 years that what you heard this month in this little fellowship, would be read by people from The Philippines, Germany,  Japan, Russia, The Ukraine, Sweden, Singapore, China and Israel, we would not have believed it.

We need His Help in this present age.

3. Admit The Obvious

Without Christ we can do nothing.
John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

With God all things are possible.
Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.

Our hearts ought to be continually crying out for help from the LORD.

Humble beginnings:
80 years ago this weekend an ice cream man here in the Metro New York Area was selling ice cream out of his truck. His truck got a flat tire. He ended up in the parking lot of a pottery shop. The owner of the shop allowed him to use the electricity from his store so he opened his parked truck for business.  For two days he sold the melting ice cream to vacationers driving by until he ran out!

He discovered three things.
People loved the soft ice cream.
A fixed location worked well.
His profits increased due to the increased sales and the lack of wear and tear on his truck.

His name was  Athanassios Karvelas, a Greek Immigrant. But you may know him better as his Americanized nameTom Carvel.

80 years ago this weekend, Carvel Ice Cream had its start (from a flat tire!)

You never know what God may do with humble beginnings!

We'll never know in our lives unless we do.

Solomon a little child, gave us the Book of Proverbs!

Humble yourself and God can use you in ways you never dreamed of!

A Man of God

I Kings 2.1-4

The Kingdom of Israel was unique. Different from all the rest, the spiritual qualifications of its leader were all important. The wickedness of Caesar Augustus is beyond imagination. He ruled Rome. But for Israel the king was to walk with God. The health and safety of nation depended on it. The king determined the spiritual tone of the nation. The people followed him.

Solomon was being charged by David with this responsibility. His spiritual life was all important. David does not talk about his leadership skills, his administrative capabilities,  his ability to command the army, the strategies he would need to win victories,  the nation's economy or other things like that. He speaks about the relationship Solomon would have with the LORD. If that was not right, all else would  not matter.

David and Solomon had a special relationship:
Proverbs 1.1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
Proverbs 3.1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart
Proverbs 4.3-5 When I was a boy in my father’s house, still tender, and an only child of my mother, he taught me and said, “Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them."

Often overlooked are those qualities which God holds as all important.  We see that in the choosing of David, when Samuel went to anoint one of the sons of Jesse.

1 Samuel 16:6-7 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the LORD'S anointed is before Him!” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD  looks at the heart.”

When the LORD was choosing a man to replace Saul he looked at the heart.
The LORD is always looking at the heart of men.
2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

What does it mean to be a man or woman of God?

1. Be strong, and prove yourself a man.
Be secure, firm, bold, display your strength, withstand

Man
A champion, a servant

Being a man of God means to be a servant of God.
Colossians 3:24 It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
The extent to which I am willing to make myself nothing is the extent to which I desire to have the mind of Christ.
We need to remember that. We need to mature into that. That is all important.

Serve- Give up yourself willingly
bondman
devoted to another to the disregard of one's own interests
attendant- ex/ in a wedding

Persecution is serving
II Timothy 3.12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

Waiting on the LORD

David was giving these instructions in Jerusalem
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people both now and forevermore. Psalm 125.1-2
1-Rock Solid City
2-Surrounded by the LORD and His angels
3-Wars have been fought there.
Jerusalem conquered 40 times
But Mount Zion stands! So will the righteous!

Psalm 5:11-12 But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love Your  Name may rejoice in you. Surely, LORD, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield.

To be a man of God means to be strong in the LORD and in His Mighty Power
Ephesians 6.10
Pray
God's Word
Put on the full armor of God

2. Keep the charge of the Lord your God:

to walk in His ways. It is  daily walk. Each day, step by step
For the king of Israel it was laid out in Deuteronomy 17.14-20
When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees.
 Solomon broke each of these

to keep
His statutes,
His commandments,
His judgments,
and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses

Genesis through Deuteronomy
Vital the king understood God was the Creator and had a good understanding of Israel's history, the details and working of God in it.

3.  Results of a Godly life
that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;

that the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

Good standing in the kingdom.
1 Timothy 3:13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

It was not the success or the accumulation of wealth that would be remembered.
It was the faithfulness to the LORD that brings a blessing as the righteous are remembered.

Being a man or woman of God means you leave the fragrance of Christ, that people think of Christ when they think of you. He must increase I must decrease.

Keep me out of sight so Jesus can shine through my life.

Just The Beginning Part Two From Last Sunday

**Part Two**
3. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus gave them the power to fulfill God's plan.

John 14:16-17 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, Whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

Abiding
John 14.16-17 above
John 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
Abiding in His Word and Prayer as He Abides with us through His Spirit and His Word.

We understand His plan through His Word.
He confirms it outwardly and inwardly.

The power of God's Spirit working out His will and plans in us!

Here is His plan Then and Now:
The power of the Holy Spirit bringing the Good News to the ends of the earth.
First in our Jerusalem: Bay Shore area. District Assembly Children
Then in Our Judea: Long Island
In our Samaria:
And to the ends of the earth.

He wants us to be witnesses here where we are in space and time.
We are part,of God's great plan for the ages.
Abraham Espada's story about the Pillar of Fire and the Spanish Nazarene Churches:
This morning before our ordination service I was talking with a gentleman by the name of Abraham Espada. His father came from Puerto Rico in the 1950s and settled in Edison, NJ. I asked him if knew of the Pillar of Fire. He lit all up. His dad was a pastor and had a Spanish Broadcast on WAWZ in 1958. He told how that broadcast was used to begin many Spanish Speaking churches in Metro NY. Many can trace their roots back to this dear man who came from Puerto Rico (His Jerusalem) to the ends of the earth.
The books that would have to be written!

Without this power we are unable to do the work of God. Without this power the work of God is hard and we get worn out, burnt out and lose heart.

Are you frustrated because the plan of God does not seem to happening in your life? Does there seem to be something lacking in your walk with the LORD? Do you desire to do things for the Kingdom of God and then shrink back? You need to be filled with God's Spirit. It is the gift of God for you!

Growing up many times it was handled through a guilt trip... no! It is a joyous gift producing great blessings through us and in us. Look at Acts 19.1-7
The Ephesian Pentecost...
God has many Pentecosts in His Sky

Empowered by His Spirit it is amazing what can be done for the kingdom.

4. What is Jesus beginning to do in your life today?
The apostles were about to have their lives turned upside down for the sake of God's Kingdom. They in turn would turn the world upside down.
Acts 17:6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too."

Acts 6.1-7
Those giving full time to the ministry of the Word and Prayer
Those serving to see that the needs of the people are taken care of- Church Board/ Body of Christ
Golden Eagle Leadership Awards with Rudy on Monday night... Stephen Baldwin, Oscar Winner of The Usual Suspects...
Brazilian Housekeeper continued to witness to Stephen's wife... she spoke Portuguese to her. She would laugh every time. His wife finally asked why she was laughing. The house keeper replied, "Because you think I came here just to be your housekeeper!" She gave her life to Christ and Stephen could not get over the change in her life. After the 9-11 attacks he gave his heart to the LORD. Sarah Palin joked with Alex Baldwin that Stephen was her favorite Baldwin Brother.

God uses housekeepers who are filled with the Spirit.

We are not working jobs to make lots of money and buy stuff. We are in the place, the neighborhood we live in, we are primarily there to be a witness for Jesus Christ and the reason that you are not is that you need to be filled with the Spirit.

Helen Reinhard

What are you passionate about?
John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
flow= gushing forth

Where is pain in your life?
What stirs your heart when you see or hear about?
What is God calling you to do in this present age?
Jesus called Peter to come walk on the water to Him."LORD, if it is You, bid me come." He made it to Jesus, not without his struggles." 3 years later they had a catch that was over whelming. Then came Penetcost when they began to catch men as Jesus promised.

How are you making yourself available to Him and His kingdom?

We serve the LORD best in our areas of pain and what we are passionate about.

Just the beginning!
